Why do I need a crown?

When the dentist suggests to a patient that a tooth should have a crown placed on it, what does this mean and why does it need to be done?
A tooth may need to have a crown placed on it for a number of reasons. Among the most common are:
A crown provides a shield over the tooth to replace the strength that has been lost, or to keep any cracks from getting deeper.
A crown can restore your tooth’s shape and functional, provide the surface portion of a dental implant, improve the overall appearance of a damaged tooth, protect your tooth from decay, restore a broken, cracked, or chipped tooth, and be used to secure a dental bridge.
Not having a recommended crown done could lead to the tooth breaking, cracks getting deeper and possible tooth loss. If your dentist recommends you have a crown placed, ask why it needs to be done and what might happen if you don’t do it, so you can make an informed decision about your health care.
